My Theory of Writing

Ever since I could use a paper and pencil together, I knew writing always had a purpose behind it. Whether it was for a homework or whether it was just a simple love letter for my childhood crush. Most of my earlier writings are mainly for self-benefit but as time passed by this evolvedAs I grew up, I also became more aware of the different factors that I was using to deliver my intended message or fulfil the purpose of my writing. I became more able to adjust these factors such as language and tonein order to be more effective and appropriate to my intended audience(s). I then started to write for more scholarly audiences/teachers in high school with a purpose of delivering a thesis on a specific topic. In college I was able to explore and play more with different genre, medium and ways to establish author credibility. At this point writing to me became more powerful. Writing is not just something done for yourself, it can also be a way to provide unknown information for a bigger audience population with a purpose of changing an unhealthy idea, belief or behavior to help make something betterThis is what writing can do and what writing should do.
Before I even decide on publishing or speaking on a specific topic, I would always make sure that I am credible enough to deliver the message. For instance, in college, I delivered presentations, writings and speeches mainly about gun violence.

Stricter Gun Control Laws!

While the research did not conclusively prove that restrictions, or relaxation of laws, reduce gun deaths, the results indicate that gun violence tended to decline after countries passed new restrictions on gun purchasing and ownership,” says co-author Sandro Galea, PhD, in an interview at Columbia University. Both Roof and Atchison had previous records that should have prevented them from purchasing a gun. Records such as mental records, criminal records and drug use record can prevent gun from falling into the possession of the dangerous people. Despite these “restrictions” that the government placed in order to “protect” the citizens, there are still people like Roof and Atchison, bypassing the system. (Inquiry-Based Essay)

After multiple of mass shooting on TV, I got curious about gun violence and I learned things that I could not have known without researching deeply into the topic. I wanted to amplify the information that I got to the adult population, but I wasn’t the most credible author to talk about this ongoing epidemic in the United States and suggest ways to solve it. Even then, the very least I would always do is to inform myself about the topic using credible sources of organizations, writers and researchers. This provided me some important knowledge and ideas from the authors who are more credible, therefore helping me become more credible by using credible authors as a base for my ideas and thoughts.
In writing, there will always be an audience that an author will try to communicate to. The audience should always have a commonality of concern, interest, background etc. with the author. Without this connection it will be hard to fulfil the purpose in writing. The author must find out who are the most interested people in the topic and who might need to know about the topic that can help make the issue better The author will then generate a general audience population and aim to appeal to their interest by using an appropriate language and genre.

For instance, in my Composition of Two Genre, my audience are adult Americans who I believe can take legal actions to help decrease the increasing rate of gun violence. Based on my prior knowledge and observation of my targeted audience I knew that the majority of them are busy people who only has limited time to learn things that are not related to their careers or themselves. This has led me create a composition that has a casual language and a fast delivery genre, a sticker. This can be posted in the bus, trains, posts, phones, computers and other everyday items that the adults interact with at least once. I composed it to have simple short phrases to be catchy and to be easily understood by any adults. With these I aim to spark a concern and curiosity for my audience to take action in ending gun violence that might not have concerned them.

I believe that every writing is most successful if its able to deliver a message and change something on its targeted audience for the betterIn my writings the main key in delivering a properly and well-organized idea is by determining the purpose first. This includes determining my stance and goal on the topic I’m writing aboutMy usual goal in writing is to inform and persuade my audience to take action that is needed. By determining my purpose, am able toidentify aeffective way to deliver a message (genre and medium) and adjust some factors to be more appropriate to the audience (tone, language)This is helpful in both academic and non-academic writings that I do. For instance, I know that I always forget to do things and miss deadlines so in order to change this behavior I decided to write to myself on my phone or on a  calendar in a more unique way than I would if I was writing to a different audience.
The language in this genre (notes) may be confusing to other readers but my intended audience(myself)will be able to understand and react in sync with the purpose of this writing in a fast and effective way which makes this writing successful!
Writing is one of the most powerful ways to influence and help a person in a lot of ways. Without writing, there won’t be any textbooks that helps guide students to understand the course. We will have a chaotic society since the laws put in place would be unknown to those who were not present in the time of passing them. Writing can be a very powerful tool especially when the author knows how to adjust the genre, language, tone, audience, etc., to fit a purpose. With this potential, writing should be used to help make something or anything better than what it was.
